Anyways, Chicago is one kickass town... had gotten kicked out of Wrigley Field (darn Cubbies had to be out of town) and had a crazy cab driver yesterday, saw firworks on Navy Pier last night, rode the subways a lot... my kind of town. Yep pah...

Yeah Jax, and if for nothing else, just for the pizza alone. I had one at Pazolini's on N. State Street downtown. *drools with memory*

Hey! i was in Chicago once- it's a real city! Actually- it's a pretty cool city- except parking rates are astronomical! (Buy a parking garage in Chicago if you want to make bank!)
But still-old brick buildings, people treading busy streets, museums, good indian food, snow in winter, etc.. Not so bad.
New York is awsome. Detroit- i wouldn't know if it hit me.
But for a REAL city? (Not just 'real,' but REAL!) LA!
LA rocks!

No disrespect at all to Ski, but I'd take Chicago over New York any day. I used to go to Detroit all the time, and it's not a terrible place to be. But the smell of Del Rey is something I hope I never experience again. I'm tempted to tout the virtues of Dayton, but to be realistic, there aren't many that would appeal to someone outside of this area -- except the music, of course, which has always been second to none.
LA? I'm prejudiced against it, but I've never been there so I'll just say nothing more.
For my money, nothing beats Minneapolis-St. Paul. H?sker D?, The Replacements, The Mary Tyler Moore show, Prince, 1st Avenue/7th Street Entry, and breathtaking winters make this my pick for greatest American metroplex. And for dwim specifically, you being a poet and all, you should make a pilgrimmage to the Twin Cities at some point and visit the bridge from which John Berryman jumped to his all-too-early death. Morbid as it sounds, it's quite inspiring.
Welcome back, dwim.
take care

ps. Worst city in America? Easy: Youngstown, Ohio. I would feel safer walking alone down an alley at midnight in Harlem than I would surrounded by friends at the Penguin Pub even before the sun goes down. I even know a guy who lived on the street for three years in New York who agrees that Youngstown is the most dangerous and least redeeming city in the U.S.

Lulu, I was there for the National Poetry Slam Competition, which was a cool event. The Dayton team ranked low but they kicked some asses and impress enough. Oh and it was the LA slam team that won the whole bit. But yeah, Chicago got the flavor that appealed to me. Well, anyways...
Lulu, I'm home!
Ski, I want to go to New York City someday, it will happen. Could be next year or the year after that, I'm getting tired of putting it off for so long.

I like LA. A friend of mine just moved to Hollywood a couple of months ago.
San Francisco's pretty cool.
